Rap Treats #95: Jam Master Jay DJ Set on Westwood (1998)

In all my travels through the internet, I have come across exactly 1 recording of a Jam Master Jay DJ set - and this is it. Jay was seriously my hero growing up and the reason I started DJing so this is extra ill to me. This is JMJ spinning an old school set on Tim Westwood's radio show in the UK. JMJ gets at all the classics and even starts his set off by rappin' a verse of "Peter Piper". Shouts to StepOne for the find.

Vinyl People

This is about people who REALLY like records. I belong to this group, although not as much as the dudes in this video do. These are actually the people who REALLY REALLY like records.

"A portrait of Vinyl collectors and producers and aficionados. From the owner of a Charlie Parker album worth 10,000 who believes in playing it and prefers mono to stereo to the producers at Norton Records where rock musicians who had fallen off the charts are restored to vinyl to be heard again. To that add the proprietor of Fynl Vinyl, straight out of a Nick Hornsby novel and a homemade Gramophone brought by it's owner and maker to Washington Square Park every Sunday to play a collection of 78's."

CD Turntable

I want one of these bitches!

"Pete Verrando in an audio engineer who has 20 years of experience in Production Sound Recording for film and television. He works all over the world doing on-location recording.

Pete has built something that is part innovative, part steampunk and part crazy-geek-inventor-guy. It’s something I’ve often tossed around in my mind, but he has taken things one step further and has actually built one: A CD turntable.

Actually, he’s built four of them. They look just like regular turntables, with a rotating disc and a tonearm, but they don’t play vinyl records, they play CD’s."

Vinyl Killer 2.0 - Mini Clubman

This Mini Clubman is a record player (if you look close you can see the speaker holes on top of the car). It's the Vinyl Killer 2.0. I first saw the original vinyl killer on that turntable poster that came in one of the issues of Grand Royal Magazine and I had to get one (they even released a "Bling Bling" version). the Vinyl Killer costs about $110 bucks, only plays at 331/3, and mashes the shit out of your records, but it's cool a fuck! You can get it online by going HERE.

"It's not the record that spins. The world's smallest self running record player doesn't need turntables but churns out music by driving round the record with a needle that is underneath the car. If you have this, you can enjoy music whenever and wherever you are. 33RPM Only. Built in motor, amplifier and speaker. Requires 9V alkali [sic] battery."

The Archive - World's Biggest Record Collection

This dude owns the biggest record collection in the world. His name is Paul Mawhinney and he has over 3 million records. That is insane. I thought I was pretty fancy with 10 000 records or so. Anyways, Paul is also looking to sell them all for 3 million. That's under $1 per record! Steal of a deal. I guess he's already digitalized them for Serato.
