Rap Treats #100: BIGGIE/Craig Mack - B.I.G. Mack Sampler ('94)

Rap Treat # 100. That's right.

We figured we'd have BIGGIE do the honours for number one hundid. This is the infamous B.I.G. Mack promo cassette that has 6 Craig Mack songs on side A and and 6 BIGGIE SMALLS songs side B. hands down b-side wins again! This was one of the first, if not the first, major promo campaigns that Bad Boy and shit was genius. This tape's gem is the original version of BIGGIE's "Me & My Bitch". Sample clearance issues is said to be the reason this version didn't make the final version of the album. I dig this one much better. It's the version BIGGIE and Puff intended the world to hear but never made it past the promo tape.

This is basically why we have a section called Classic Material. BIGGIE performing "Get Money" with Jay-Z as his hype man back in '96. This all happened at Ralph McDaniels birthday party. Peep his run down below.

“I wanted to get B.I.G. to host [it], but really I wanted him to perform. Jay-Z came with the whole Roc-A-Fella crew and they got on stage. I told the DJ, ‘If Biggie gets on stage, play a Biggie song and we’ll get him to perform.’ DJ Ace threw on ‘Get Money’ and the whole crowd went crazy. B.I.G. looks at me like, ‘I guess I’m supposed to perform now, right?’ Jay-Z plays hypeman to B.I.G. on ‘Get Money.’ That just rang through the hood forever.”

This isn't rare but it's dope as hell. This is Biggie freestyling in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn at the age of 17. I think (actually more guessing) that this is the battle scene that they tried recreating in the movie Notorious.

These are Volumes 1-4 of the Bad Boy mix tapes that came out in the mid 90's. This was the era when mixtapes were actually mixed on cassette tapes (I still can't use the term "Mix CD"). Before the internet was poppin, this was the place to get exclusive freestyles and all the newest Bad Boy records from BIGGIE, Craig Mack, The Lox, 112 and anything Bad Boy. They also had all the hottest records of the day, not just Bad Boy joints. Add to that they are hosted by Puff Daddy and mixed by the hottest DJs in NYC at the time and these are classics tapes.

Demos: BIGGIE SMALLS' Unsigned Hype Demo Tape (1992)

When it comes to BIGGIE's demo tape that got him recognized by The Source and their Unsigned Hype column (and eventually by Puffy) I had to question which version is the real demo tape. I've heard that THIS is his Unsigned Hype demo, however one listen and all it sounds like is a collection of freestyles that have DJ drops all over them (even though it does include some of the songs below). On top of that, the Unsigned Hype column said there were 4 songs on the tape and there are 6 songs on the demo in question so I'm saying FUCK THAT. I don't buy it, not as BIGGIE's demo tape that was shopped to labels back in '91/92 anyways.

Then there is the 3 songs that are on the Notorious soundtrack and also at the #1 spot on Complex's Demo List. "Guaranteed Raw", "Love No Hoe", and "Microphone Murder" are by all accounts on the tape that made its way to The Source. There was also a 4th song on the demo that, through hours and hours of extensive research, I believe was "The Wickedest". "The Wickedest" eventually found a home on Funk Flex's Mix Tape Volume 4 that came out in '94 and was credited to Biggie & Mister Cee (who was responsible for shopping BIG's demo around) so it makes sense that it wasn't included on the Notorious soundtrack as a "previously unreleased demo".

That brings us to the 4 songs below that were on BIGGIE's Unsigned Hype demo tape. This isn't a rip of the tape itself, however, but it is the best sounding versions of the 4 songs that made up the demo tape that sparked the career of one of the greatest rapper to ever do it - BIGGIE SMALLS!

This has been floating around for the past couple of day but I just checked it out now. It's a pretty dope look at what a Biggie show was like at the height of his reign. It's not professionally filmed at all (in fact it may be the worst attempt at filming your homie show ever) but you still get a good vibe of Bad Boy circa 1995.

There are lots of unreleased and original versions so I'm sure at least some of this was originally meant for Ready To Die.

Then the video ends in the middle of Biggie's verse. Method Man can be heard on the mic too. Anybody have the complete footage?

Plus her titty is out. Anyways, here is some rare shit - a reference track of BIGGIE doing Lil Kim's "Queen Bitch". You see, Biggie wrote Kim's rhymes so he recorded himself rapping the lyrics so she could listen and see how it should be done. That also explains why she rapped just like BIGGIE. And as a bonus, I also included BIGGIE rapping Lil Cease's verse from "Players Anthem". Apparently BIG wrote his rhymes too.
