The Original Gangster Ice-T has been deep in the rap game since the mid 80's. With classic after classic under his belt, he is one of the most respected rappers in the game by both fans and peers. With that said, not many people could pull off a film like Art Of Rap. It's full of all our heroes speaking on, well, the art of rapping. Chuck D, KRS One, Mos Def, Q-Tip, Common, Kanye West, Nas, Doug E Fresh, B-Real, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Snoop, Ice Cube, Xzibit, Treach, Redman, Bun B, Afrika Bambaataa, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Marley Marl, Kool Keith, Melle Mel, Run DMC (and more) all make an appearance. On June 15th the Art Of Rap is coming to a theatre near you. This is is a first day, first screening appointment for me!

Rap Treats #74: KDAY Concerts - Eazy-E & N.W.A + Public Enemy + King Tee Live From Skateland USA, Compton

For a rap radio junkie like myself, Los Angeles' KDAY is up there with Mr. Magic on WBLS, DJ Red Alert on KISS, Stretch & Bobbito on WKCR, and Sway & King Tech on KMEL. In fact, in my eyes it trumps them all because KDAY was the first station to adopt an all Hip-Hop format in 1983. What can you say about a station who's street team included Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Ice-T, MC Hammer, Tone Loc, Kid Frost, and Young MC to name a few. It's the station that coined the term "Traffic Jam" and was the first to play artists like N.W.A. Tapes of KDAY have been hard to come across, even in the age of the internet, but thanks to OldSchoolRapTapes a few have surfaced. These are concerts by Eazy-E & N.W.A., Public Enemy, and King Tee who performed Live in Compton that were broadcast on the station. There is also a recording of Ice-T introducing his "new" record "Colder Than Ever" that I had never heard before. These recordings are nowhere close to being CDQ so you'll have to deal with the sound quality, but 1580 KDAY was an AM station so there isn't much that could have been done about that.

That's right. Darlene is still #1. Before their was Vida Guerra, Melyssa Ford, Lola Luv, Esther Baxter and a host of other very banging video chicks, there was Ice-T's girl Darlene Ortiz aka "The Syndicate Queen". Ice-T knew that sex sells and his girl was hands down the sexiest (sorry KRS, Ms. Melody loses), but at the same time she was never looked at as a bitch. Remember her on the Rhyme Pays album cover? How about the Power cover? It's one of THE most classic Hip-Hop album covers ever. Just like LL, I took that shit straight home to the bathroom! AllHipHop.com caught up with the former Mrs. T and spoke to her about everything you can really talk to Darlene about - her life with Ice-T, her two famous album covers, Superhead, Coco (Ice's new wife), today's video vixens, and what life has been like since Darlene and Ice-T ended their 17 year relationship.
