This is a documentary that was done by some German guy (I think) back in '86 who was obviously captured by Hip-Hip music and culture. He talks to Run DMC, LL Cool J, Russell Simmons, Ice-T and whoever else was poppin' in 1986. Dope studio footage of Mr. Magic's Rap Attack on WBLS as well as lots of performances, studio, and party footage. The illest shit is watching a very Run DMC influenced duo called The Mystery Crew rapping out front of Russell Simmons office trying to get a record deal, which obviously didn't happen because I had never heard of The Mystery Crew until I watched this. This shit is dope as hell.

Records: Pete Rock & CL Smooth - "T.R.O.Y." 12"
This is hands down one of the GREATEST 12 INCHES OF ALL TIME. This is not open for discussion. "T.R.O.Y." is one of the illest songs from one of the illest eras in Hip-Hop and "The Creator" is about as good a b-side there is. Plus, they did a vocal remix where both Pete Rock & CL spit over "The Creator" beat. Pete Rock & CL Smooth are classic material and there is no denying what the "Pete Rock remix" has meant to Hip-Hop - just ask Public Enemy and House Of Pain.

Rap Treats #29: Jay-Z Live @ Glastonbury (Audio)
Jay-Z took over the headlining spot from the Rock&Roll dudes at Glastonbury last night and tore the house down. No need to go over the controversy surrounding his appearance, but starting his set with "Wonderwall" was a legendary move and a stellar fuck you to dude from Oasis. Henry Rollins Doesn't Like Rave People
I mean he really doesn't like rave people. Even though I really don't like most rave music either (I love rave people though!), this shit still started to annoy me. It was funny at first, but then it just got sad. Dude sounds like an old man. Pretty hilarious how the lead 'singer' of Black Flag was cracking on techno because it sounds like noise and is associated with drugs. Who said this guy could do stand up?

Rap Treats #27: High Potent (Jay-Z circa 1986)
This one took me by surprise. This is a 16 year old Jay-Z making his first appearance on wax along side Jaz as the group High Potent. I always thought that "Hawaiian Sophie" and "The Originators" with Jaz were Hov's first rap appearances but I was wrong. This was released in 1986 on Get Live Records so it's super official. It's also super old school and kinda corny at times. I mean this record sounds like it's straight out of Krush Groove or Beat Street. It's a trip to think MC JZ put out his first record the same year as Eric B & Rakim, Boogie Down Productions, and Ice-T. Nobody can say that Jay didn't pay his dues. In fact he paid them for 10 years before he released Reasonable Doubt. Shouts to Cocaine Blunts, it's a hell of a blog.

Rap Treats #26: N.W.A. Live At Celebrity Arena (1989)
Some more rare rap shit. This is N.W.A. Live At The Celebrity Arena circa 1989. This isn't the concert from the 'Boyz In The Hood' tour poster above (but I love old concert poster/flyers so I had to use it), it's a N.W.A. and Eazy-E concert from a few years later. I say N.W.A. AND Eazy-E because Eazy-E had top billin' back then. N.W.A. rocks first and then they bring out Eazy-E. It's a trip to hear Dr. Dre and Ice Cube intro Eazy and play the hype man role. It's basically just like the "We Want Eazy" video. I assume Celebrity Arena is in Compton because at the end of the show the crowd starts to wild out and you can hear some dude yell "Compton's in the house!" This is N.W.A. in Los Angeles at the height of their popularity. As a bonus, I also upped Eazy-E & Dr. Dre Live At The Roadium Swapmeet, which is a 10 minute Dr. Dre megamix hosted by Eazy Motherfuckin' E from 1986.

Rap Treats #25: BIGGIE "Queen Bitch" (Reference Track)
I figured I'd post a photo of Lil Kim on this one because even though she's starting to enter Michael Jackson land with all her plastic surgeries, I'd still rather look at her than BIGGIE's ugly ass. Plus her titty is out. Anyways, here is some rare shit - a reference track of BIGGIE doing Lil Kim's "Queen Bitch". You see, Biggie wrote Kim's rhymes so he recorded himself rapping the lyrics so she could listen and see how it should be done. That also explains why she rapped just like BIGGIE. And as a bonus, I also included BIGGIE rapping Lil Cease's verse from "Players Anthem". Apparently BIG wrote his rhymes too.
